Xee 2.0 for Mac

Xee is a lightweight, fast and convenient image viewer and browser. It is designed to be a serious tool for image viewing and management, with a sleek and powerful interface.

Xee is useful as a more powerful replacement for Preview, or most any other image viewer available on Mac OS X. It is very fast, and uses less memory than most other image viewing tools.

Xee does not have a thumbnail browsing mode; instead, you use the mouse scroll wheel to quickly flip through all pictures in a folder. If you set Xee as the default program for opening images, you can use the thumbnail view of the Mac Finder for browsing and double-click the images to open them in Xee for closer inspection.

Unlike Mac's default Preview application, Xee opens pictures in a large window which nearly fills your screen, or you can set it to use a full screen view. In full-screen, all menu commands are available by right clicking. You can view your pictures in a slide show with any slide duration. Xee also lets you preview animations, which can be paused and browsed frame-by-frame.

Xee offers file management commands which allow you to delete, rename, and quickly copy or move images to other folders. You can crop, rotate, and mirror images, or send them to any installed graphics application for further editing. Lossless JPEG rotation is supported.

Every command in Xee can be assigned one or more custom keyboard shortcuts, and you can assign shortcuts for up to ten different folders for the copy and move commands. You can also customize its toolbar with buttons for navigation, zooming, rotation, and file management.

At first, I didn't think Xee supported automatic rotation of photos, but after looking into its preferences I found this option. So digital camera photos that were taken in portrait orientation can be rotated automatically.

Another feature that wasn't obvious was viewing camera EXIF data. This is available from the Get Info command, which I incorrectly assumed would open Mac's standard Info panel. When you're viewing in full screen mode, the EXIF data window becomes partially transparent--a nice touch.

Xee is a very efficient viewer for when you want to take a quick peek at an image without opening a full-fledged image editor. It supports a large number of formats including camera raw files from all major digital camera manufacturers.
